What is hCG?

HCG is the acronym for human chorionic gonadotropin, a substance produced by the placenta during pregnancy in huge amounts. It was discovered by Ascheim and Zondek in the urine of pregnant women, back as 1927.  After its discovery, scientists tried to find a name for this substance and when they observed that the administration of large doses of hCG helped to provoke ovulation in animals, they named their discovery Gonadotropin (acts on the gonads or testicles/ovaries). However, hCG has no stimulating effect whatsoever on normally developed and normally functioning sex-glands.

How does hCG work?

This was the great discovery from a British Physician, Dr. ATW Simeons who first reported the use of hCG for the management of obesity in 1954. In the past he had noticed that adolescent boys with delayed puberty and abnormal fat accumulation greatly improved when treated with hCG. This is when he investigated the use of a specific hypocaloric diet combined with hCG in reducing body weight and mobilizing fat stores. Years of clinical practice seeing thousands of patients he found that patients tolerate a low calorie diet well with hCG with no side effects, patients lost more body fat than with diet and exercise alone, and that hCG acts on the brain to modulate fat release. Because hCG acts at the level of the brain center it may actually reset the metabolism for long lasting results.
